Our Story
Kohvand means “of the mountains”
“Koh” means mountain in Dari, the Persian of Afghanistan. Our stones come from the mountains of the Hindu Kush; our work is to bring them to Europe with care and with the paperwork.

Founder & CEO
Ahmadshah
Ahmadshah, founder and CEO of Kohvand, is a Dutch entrepreneur with family roots in Afghanistan, and brings both cultures to the business: knowledge of the region and its people, and an understanding of what European buyers need.
Ahmadshah is personally involved in selecting stones, keeping contact with suppliers, checking documents and answering customers. A fuller introduction follows here soon.
Why we started
Afghan emerald and lapis lazuli are among the most admired stones in the world. Yet European jewellers who want to work with them often find little reliable information about where a stone comes from, how it was treated and which documents exist.
Kohvand wants to close that gap: real photos of the actual stone, plain descriptions, and the papers we hold for it, before you decide.

How we work
Documents first
Every stone has a code, real photos and the papers we hold for it.
Plain language
We say what a stone is and what it is not. No inflated claims.
Long relationships
We would rather supply one jeweller for ten years than a hundred once.
